A Hill Country Favorite
A Short Ride Worth Taking Your Time On
Some rides deserve a place on your calendar even when you only have an afternoon to spare. The Devil’s Backbone motorcycle ride is one of them.
With rolling hills, limestone scenery, and curves that keep you engaged, this Texas Hill Country route gives you a good reason to leave the interstate behind. Build your day around a relaxed ride, a few scenic stops, and enough time to enjoy wherever you end up.
We included Devil’s Backbone in our guide to the Best Motorcycle Rides in Texas. Here’s a closer look at planning your ride.
01 / The Route
Wimberley to Blanco via Devil’s Backbone
The signature stretch follows Ranch Road 32, southwest of Wimberley near Fischer. For a straightforward outing, start in Wimberley and finish in Blanco.
- Take Ranch Road 12 south from Wimberley.
- Turn west onto Ranch Road 32 to ride the Devil’s Backbone.
- Continue to U.S. 281, then head north into Blanco.
This itinerary covers approximately 30–35 miles one way, depending on your exact stops. That includes the approach and finish; the famous ridgeline section is only part of the trip.
02 / Find Your Pace
A Ride Best Enjoyed at Your Own Pace
The appeal here is the rhythm of the road: rolling terrain, changing views, and the pleasure of spending a few hours on two wheels.
Choose a pace that lets you read the pavement and respond comfortably to whatever appears around the next bend. A scenic road still carries everyday traffic, and an unfamiliar curve deserves your full attention.
Ride Your Own Ride
If you’re riding with friends, agree on regrouping stops before leaving. Nobody should feel pressured to keep up or make a last-second turn to stay with the group.
03 / Worth Pulling Over For
Four Stops to Build Into Your Day
Start in Wimberley
Make Wimberley your meeting point for breakfast, fuel, and a quick motorcycle check. Inspect your tires, lights, brakes, and luggage straps before heading out.
Set your navigation while parked so you can focus on the ride.
Stop for the View
Plan a break at the Devil’s Backbone scenic overlook. Assess the entrance and parking surface before turning in, and watch for vehicles rejoining traffic.
Park fully clear of the travel lane, then take your time with the photographs.
Devil’s Backbone Tavern
Located at 4041 FM 32 in Fischer, this longstanding roadside destination offers live music and local character. Its ghost stories add to the folklore surrounding the area.
Check the tavern’s hours and events before visiting. If you’re getting back on the motorcycle, keep the stop alcohol-free.
Finish in Blanco
Blanco makes a natural place to pause before heading home. Give yourself time to eat, hydrate, and decide whether you’re ready for more miles.
Leave enough time and energy for the return journey.
04 / Before You Go
Prepare for the Road Ahead
- Set your speed before a curve. Leave room for changes in the road or traffic ahead.
- Watch the pavement. Look for gravel, storm debris, and changes in surface condition.
- Keep your eyes on the road. Save long looks at the scenery for a safe stop.
- Leave generous following distance. Give yourself time to respond when another vehicle slows or turns.
- Plan for daylight. Leave time to get back before darkness makes an unfamiliar road harder to read.
- Carry water and wear protective gear. Take breaks before fatigue affects your attention.
Check Conditions Before You Leave
Review the forecast and current road conditions before departure. Adjust your plans for rain, poor visibility, or extreme temperatures. Check DriveTexas for reported road conditions and closures.
