Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage or “UIM” is a type of insurance coverage for motorcycle accident injuries. It provides protection to bikers when they suffer a motorcycle accident injury caused by a driver who either has no insurance or does not have enough insurance to cover the medical expenses and damages for pain and suffering related to the biker’s motorcycle accident injury.
It is kind of confusing because if a biker has UIM he is basically suing two different insurance companies for his motorcycle accident injury (or maybe the same, which is always interesting, when for example both the biker (UIM) and the other driver (General Liability) are both insured by the company, e.g., State Farm).
When the other driver’s insurance is exhausted, the biker’s UIM kicks in.
It’s important to note that UIM coverage is optional in Texas.
How do I talk to my biker brothers and sisters about UIM to make sure they are protected in the event of suffering a serious motorcycle accident injury?
When discussing Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UIM) with your fellow biker brothers and sisters, it is essential to begin with how bad it sucks to be seriously injured in a motorcycle accident by some numbskull or drunk or unlicensed driver or worst of all hit and run mofo. Unless you have UIM a biker may receive $0 recovery for a serious motorcycle accident injury that was 0% the biker’s fault!
A biker’s General Liability policy (the one that is required by Texas law) insures people the biker injures. Other people, not the biker. It offers the biker NOTHING in the way of coverage. I repeat. A biker’s motorcycle accident injury will not be paid for by the biker’s General Liability policy required under Texas law. In order to receive compensation from a biker’s insurance company for a biker’s motorcycle accident injury, the biker MUST HAVE UIM.
UIM should be talked about on the regular. That a biker may be shi! out of luck after a motorcycle accident injury if the biker does not have UIM and the other driver is hit and run or some drunk, unlicensed driver.
Here are some more formal suggestions on how to communicate the importance of UIM:
- Start with the purpose: Begin the conversation by explaining what UIM coverage is and why it matters. Emphasize that it provides an extra layer of protection in case of accidents involving uninsured or underinsured drivers.
- Share real-life scenarios: Use specific examples or stories to illustrate the potential risks and financial consequences of being involved in an accident with an uninsured or underinsured driver. Discuss situations where individuals faced difficulties in obtaining fair compensation due to inadequate insurance coverage.
- Highlight the prevalence of uninsured drivers: Share statistics or facts about the number of uninsured drivers on the road. Explain that even though insurance is legally required in most places, some individuals still choose to drive without coverage, putting other motorists at risk.
